Wix vs Custom Website: Which Is Right for Your Indian Business?
“Why can’t I just use Wix?”
We hear this a lot. And it’s a fair question. Wix is inexpensive, it looks professional, and you can build a basic site in an afternoon. So when should you use Wix, and when does a custom website make more sense?
Here’s an honest answer — not a sales pitch.
When Wix Actually Makes Sense
Wix is a good choice when:
- You’re testing a business idea and not sure if it will survive six months
- You have zero budget and need something live today
- Your website is a digital business card — name, phone, hours — and nothing more
- You’re a freelancer just starting out with no clients to convert yet
If any of these are true, Wix (or Squarespace, or Webflow’s free tier) is the right call. Don’t spend ₹20,000 on a custom site for a business that might pivot or close.
Where Wix Falls Short for Indian Businesses
For most established Indian businesses — architecture firms, interior designers, real estate developers, clinics, services businesses — Wix creates problems that aren’t obvious until you’re already in them.
Problem 1: India-specific SEO is weaker on Wix
Google India ranks sites differently than Google US. Page speed matters more than most global articles admit — India has a large proportion of mobile users on 4G rather than broadband, and Google’s mobile-first indexing is strict. Wix adds significant JavaScript overhead that slows pages down. Our custom-built sites consistently score 20–40 points higher on Google PageSpeed Insights than comparable Wix sites, which directly affects how you rank for local searches.
Problem 2: WhatsApp integration is clunky
For Indian businesses, WhatsApp is the primary contact channel. A “Chat with us on WhatsApp” button needs to work perfectly on mobile, pre-fill the message, and be visible without scrolling. On Wix, this is either a paid app or a clunky workaround. On a custom site, we build it exactly right in 30 minutes.
Problem 3: You don’t own the platform
Wix can change their pricing. They can remove features. Their free tier disappeared for existing users in 2023 for some regions. With a custom site, you own every file. If we build your site and you want to move it to a different host, you can — without losing anything.
Problem 4: Branding limits
Architecture firms and interior designers win clients on the quality of their visual presentation. Wix templates look like Wix templates. Competitors using the same template look like you. A custom site means your typography, colours, spacing, and gallery layout reflect your firm specifically — not a grid that thousands of other businesses also picked.
Problem 5: Lead capture requires paid apps
Wix’s free plan doesn’t include form submissions that go to your email without a Wix branding footer. Google Sheets integration — which lets your team track enquiries in a sheet — requires a paid Wix plan or a third-party integration. On a custom site, we connect enquiry forms directly to Google Sheets by default.
A Real Comparison
| Wix (Paid Plan) | Custom Website (Lighine) | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup time | 1–3 days DIY | 3–4 weeks |
| Cost | ₹1,200–₹4,000/month | ₹18,000 one-time |
| Year 1 total | ₹14,400–₹48,000 | ₹18,000 |
| Year 2+ total | ₹14,400–₹48,000/year | ₹2,000–₹3,000/year (hosting only) |
| Mobile speed (PageSpeed) | 50–70 typical | 85–95 typical |
| WhatsApp button | Workaround / paid app | Built-in, custom |
| Google Sheets integration | Paid plan required | Included |
| You own the code | No | Yes |
| Custom domain + branding | Yes | Yes |
| Ongoing changes | DIY or Wix support | Contact us |
Year 3 total cost comparison:
- Wix (paid plan, ₹2,000/month): ~₹72,000
- Lighine custom site: ₹18,000 + ~₹6,000 in hosting/changes = ~₹24,000
The custom site is cheaper over three years and performs better throughout.
When Custom Is Clearly Right
A custom website makes sense when:
- You’re an architecture firm, interior designer, or real estate developer where visual presentation is how you win clients
- You need WhatsApp integration that actually works on mobile
- You run outreach (WhatsApp, cold calls) and need a professional URL to send people to
- You’re on page 2 of Google for your city name and want to rank higher
- You want to own your website — not rent it from Wix indefinitely
The Honest Answer
Use Wix if you’re testing a new idea with no budget. Use a custom site when you’re serious about the business and want your website to actually generate enquiries.
The ₹18,000 we charge for a Foundation Website is less than four months of Wix’s mid-tier plan, and the site will still be working exactly the same way in five years.
